World War Heroica
The inspiration here is, of course, the world wars, especially World War I. Alliances turn a minor event into a situation spiraling out of control. Soon, war is everywhere, as no one wants to miss their shot at glory and power.
It's a setting of battle, refugees, violence and enslavement, a dog eats dog world.
