Sorcerers
I still wanted the traditional sorcerer, the stereotypical mage reading dusty old tomes to understand the nature of magic. The scholar mage.
They are careful, slow, scientific, and as such, safer. This makes them popular in service of rulers, not primarily as mages using magic, but as experts in the science of magic. They understand magic, more than use it.
