Necromancers
With necromancers, I also went off the well trodden path. Instead of just "evil" or "just a guy who raises skeletons, nothing odd about that", I went with "tragic evil". Grief turns into desperation, desperation turns into necromancy, and from there, they are trapped.
Don't get me wrong, even if they had their reason, it's still a violation of the natural order of the Heroica world, and there are costs. Having the moving corpse of a loved one breaks the mind, their body changes until it is neither alive nor dead, spirits assault them.
On top of that, they are universally reviled. Even sorcerers, who tends to study all magic, usually stay well clear of necromancy.
They might be bad guys, but they are bad guys with a back story. They are not just people who for no specific reason decided to try to raise the dead. They are trapped by circumstances, trapped in an ever tightening spiral.
