Ashkar
This one is a tough one. I think the inspiration mostly comes from Iain M Banks excellent book Surface Detail, where people go to self-imposed artificial hells, because they believe they deserve the punishment. Add in a bit of Cliver Barker and David Cronenberg, and you get Ashkar.
See it as a study of belief being stronger than the body, in a bad way.
