I wanted werebeasts, people who can change shape into animal forms, but I didn't want them to just be monsters. So, I made them into a culture, based on secrecy. They know the world isn't ready to know about them, and if it did, they would face the same hatred as changelings.
To give them a religion based on their totem animal seemed pretty obvious.
Some inspiration comes from the short story Daughter of Regals by Stephen Donaldson. Actually, pretty much of the inspiration came from it.
